Making Money from Affiliate Programs

If you want your time as a webmaster to be financially rewarding, one of the best things you can do is to join an affiliate network program.  Depending on the traffic your site receives and how well you are able to convert visitors into customers, one of these programs can be your key to financial freedom -- or at least a modest income earned from the comfort of your own home.

What is an affiliate?

In brief, an affiliate is someone who agrees to advertise a company's products or services in exchange for a portion of the profits from each sale sent to the company from his or her web site.  There are programs out there to suit just about every type of web page imaginable; everything from adult-oriented entertainment to home furnishings, children's products, insurance, and much, much more.  Even companies like Amazon have a set up for webmasters!  A simple search can direct you to web master referral schemes that will suit various needs.

Generally, in order to profit from programs like these, it is necessary to have an existing website related to the products and services you will be promoting, or to develop a site with that purpose in mind.  Though there are many ways to set up related forms and links on your pages, it is important to make sure that the information is in a prominent and easily-accessible spot so that visitors are likely to take advantage of your offerings.

What can I sell?

As mentioned earlier, there are affiliate marketing programs for just about every topic under the sun!  If you have an existing website -- especially one that is already ranking somewhat well in the search engines and attracting some traffic -- it is a good idea to choose a referral scheme that will fit with your site's current theme.

Most affiliate programs require webmasters to convert visitors into paying customers, buying items from a particular product line or signing up for a service.  Usually, this means that you can post item pictures and link to the main company from your site using a special "referral code" so that the company will be able to tell where the sale came from when your visitor clicks through and makes a purchase.

Other programs, however, want you to generate leads for lendors, insurance agents, and merchant service companies.  Instead of asking the people who come to your site to buy an item, you are offering them the chance to get a quote for things like car and health insurance, credit card processing for their small businesses, or auto and home loans.  In those situations, interested readers will fill out a form on your site, sending their information to companies that sell leads.  When someone purchases a lead that was sent from your site, you get paid.

Which program is right for me?

The benefit of joining a mortgage, loan, and/or insurance affiliate pay per lead network is that it is generally easier to get your visitors to fill out a quote request form than to make a purchase from your site.  Quotes are free -- there is no obligation to spend money or even have any further contact if the potential buyer changes his or her mind.  However, the leads you generate are still quite valuable to agents and others who hope to turn your visitors into paying customers; and so you can get paid whether or not they buy into a policy, take out a loan, or subscribe to a service.

Of course, traditional affiliate programs have their place as well.  If you already have a site that is generating a lot of traffic talking about specific products or services, you can earn a great deal of money making those products available directly from your web page or blog.  This would work very well for a blogger who writes about home and fashion trends, or an adult webmaster who showcases related novelty items.

Regardless, once you sign up with an affiliate network, the work is not over.  Unless you take the time to promote your site, improve its search engine rankings, and achieve placement in organic search results for your target keywords, you will never turn a profit.  Making money through referral programs can be extremely lucrative and comparatively easy, but time and effort is absolutely a requirement!
