HTML sitemap is used by the visitors visiting the website whereas XML sitemap is used by the crawlers crawling the website. XML sitemap is mainly designed for crawling purpose and is not used by any of the visitors...but both HTML and XML sitemaps are important for proper indexing and positioning in major search engines.....

I think XML site maps are better for the SEO. As XML site maps can improve SEO of site by making sure that all pages can be found. Also helps in crawling of the site.
